WHAT IS RISE FOR EDUCATION ALLIANCE - UP DILIMAN?
The Rise for Education Alliance - UP Diliman remains as the broadest alliance of individuals, organizations, councils, fraternities, and publications who believe and clamor for our right to education in UP Diliman.
Since its inception in 2014, the UP Diliman chapter, as a part of the national Rise for Education alliance, has been at the forefront of the fight of students for free education for all and students’ democratic rights inside and outside the university.
Because of our united and strengthened call for our right to education and genuine democratic rights, we have landed victories both in college and university level. Through our collective actions, we have asserted almost 400 dormitory slots in 2015, failed the attempted 2.2 B budget cut in UP, and amplified our call to abolish the profiteering Socialized Tuition Scam and all redundant, exorbitant, and dubious other school fees collected from students.
In various colleges, we were able to demand from the local administrations to allow students to enter libraries even though they are not yet paid with their matriculation and to uphold a moratorium on other school fees collected from students. These advancements in our fight proved that we can achieve far greater victories for free education for all and our democratic rights.
In 2017, we landed on one of the highlights of our long-fought struggle for free education - the implementation of free tuition in all state universities and colleges (SUC) nationwide. Through our nonstop assertion and our steadfast stance that education is a right, we pushed the Duterte government to heed our call for free education and to allocate Php 8.3 B budget to cover the tuition and other school fees of all students in SUCs.
Inside the university, because of the series of big protest actions, we pushed the administration to side with us in our fight, hence Chancellor Michael Tan, followed by all other chancellors of other UP units, announced immediately the non-collection of tuition and other school fees for the first semester of AY 2017-2018. Amidst the attempt of President Danilo Concepcion to withdraw the pronouncements made by Chancellor Tan and all other chancellors of other UP units, still, through our ever-fortified unity for free education, we urged President Concepcion to side with us.
In 2019, we also struggled to maintain the integrity of our university by fending off threats of campus militarization and Malacanang intervention in our local university leadership. Through the unity of the alliance with organizations and administrators, we successfully guarded the UP Diliman chancellor selection process and compelled the Board of Regents to decide in favor of the community. The UP administration, through newly selected Chancellor Nemenzo, has concrete commitments in enacting various demands stated in the UP Diliman Student Agenda as a manifesto of students’ rights.
